Violin Making Courses with Derek Roberts FAQ

This is the FAQ for violin making courses which Derek Roberts teaches at his workshop in Leamington Spa. The evening classes which Derek used to teach at the Warwickshire College are now discontinued.

Who are the courses suitable for? Anyone who wishes to make or restore a violin, viola or cello under the guidance of a professional violin maker.
How long do the courses last? These courses are held as three, four or five full day courses.
When are the courses held? Please check our main Violin Making Courses pages for current dates.
Where are the courses held? At Derek Roberts' workshop, 1 Freemans Close, Leamington Spa, CV32 6EY.
Do I need specialist tools? All the tools you need are provided in the workshop. If you want to continue work at home you may need to get some tools.
What about materials? Derek will advise you on the materials you need and where to obtain them. These include a maple wedge for the back, a maple scroll block and ribs, spruce for the front. You will not need to buy everything at once. Derek provides a ready-made mould if required, and can supply other materials.
Do I have to be a skilled woodworker? No, anyone can benefit from the courses. If you already have woodworking skills you will probably make faster progress.
How long will it take to complete a violin? It varies - everyone works at their own pace. You will not finish a violin during a five day course. You may like to work on your violin at home.
