Violin Making Classes with Derek Roberts FAQ
This is the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page for our feature article on violin making classes which Derek Roberts teaches at his workshop in Leamington Spa. The classes which Derek used to teach at the Warwickshire College are now discontinued.
Who are the classes suitable for? Anyone
who wishes to make or restore a violin, viola or cello under the
guidance of a professional violin maker.
How long do the classes last? These classes are held
as three, four or five full day courses.
When are the classes held? Please check
our main Violin Making Courses pages for current dates.
Where are the classes held? At Derek Roberts'
workshop, 1 Freemans Close, Leamington Spa, CV32 6EY.
Do I need specialist tools? All the
tools you need are provided in the workshop. If you want
to continue work at home you may need to get some tools.
What about materials? Derek will advise
you on the materials you need and where to obtain them.
These include a maple wedge for the back,
a maple scroll block and ribs,
spruce for the front,
and plywood for a mould.
You will not need to buy everything at once.
Do I have to be a skilled woodworker?
No, anyone can benefit from the classes. If you already have woodworking
skills you will probably make faster progress.
How long will it take to complete a violin?
It varies - everyone works at their own pace. Some people work on their violin at home,
others work only in the classes.
Can I visit a class before joining?
You are welcome to visit; please contact Derek
Roberts first to arrange this.
